The northwestern coast of North America has ideal climatic conditions for peppermint cultivation due to regular and abundant annual rainfall. This also ensures a high menthol content, which gives peppermint its minty aroma and flavour.
How is it sourced?
Peppermint, a hybrid of watermint and spearmint, is a perennial herb. The essential oil is extracted from the aerial parts of the plant. When peppermint is ready for harvest, it is cut at the base and left to dry in the field for a few days. Then it is crushed before distillation. Approximately half a kilogram of peppermint leaves are needed to produce a 15 ml essential oil. Throughout the autumn, the by-product of distillation is reused as mulch.
