Why Bulgaria?

Bulgaria has a 200-year tradition of rose cultivation, primarily for essential oil production, making it one of the world's largest producers of rose oil. Located next to the Black Sea, Bulgaria offers excellent growing conditions due to its dry, sunny climate and well-drained, sandy soil.

How does sourcing work?

The rose species cultivated and distilled for doTERRA Rose essential oil is the Damask rose (Latin name Rosa damascena). Rose bushes are typically planted in the autumn and are ready for harvesting by May or June. Roses prefer sandy, clay-free soil with a sunny, moderately moist climate and mild winters.

The essential oil is extracted from the flower petals via steam distillation. The flowers are picked by hand in the early morning hours and distilled later the same day. It is important to distill the rose petals on the day of harvest to extract the highest possible yield of oil from the delicate petals. 

Creating Livelihoods and Preserving Traditions

Bulgaria can proudly claim to be one of the countries that have long been pioneers in the research, development, and production of essential oils. However, during the post-communist era, there was some stagnation, as the government at that time provided financial support primarily for the cultivation of wheat, sunflowers, and corn.
